Best versatile GSP kennels

Postby oldtimer » Wed Sep 14, 2022 11:25 pm

My son is interested in a GSP, he lives in NE. I would sure be thankful for any input. NAVHDA bred dogs please. I have owned DDs so long I am out of the loop. Thank you in advance.

I suggest he contact the Heartland NAVHDA chapter. There are several small scale GSP breeders in that chapter with excellent dogs. Their lines come from Sharpshooter kennel.

Just curious, why not go with DKs?
Since you are familiar with DD, the breeding requirements are almost the same... slightly less emphasis on the track (at the puppy test).
Also far more DK guys are involved with NAVHDA than the DD guys.
There are quite active clubs and chapters in that area. (NADKC & DK-GNA)

This isn't meant as a criticism of the DK, but more as a complement to what a handful of shorthair breeders have done with their dogs, in the absence of a specific primary focus on blood trailing I wouldn't specifically seek out a DK.

The Sharpshooter shorthairs, along with Hurricane and some others that have bred somewhat off of Sharpshooter lines, the Friedelsheim/Sundance line shorthairs, and a couple others I'm probably missing, are going to accomplish everything you want.

For sure there are great GSP out there. And there are many of them.

Only difference will be, imho, that the DK have more consistency as far as the look and physical morphology goes.
If you like what the DD does and you are happy what the VDD has achieved it will be at least interesting to see what other breed club, with nearly identical* breeding requirements has done... unless you are looking for a smaller and faster more fieldsh GSP.

*Unlike other breeds, DD, DL, SM, etc that are required to pass the puppy test, the VJP, the DK have their own, breed wide NA test, where the tracking is not required (but can happen) and more empathies is on search, speed, ability to pin bird from far distance and stylish pointing. The DK can do both, VJP or Derby, no other breed has that option.

However, DK has not achieved the same success as DD, which as a breed is growing quite fast in the US.
