Cricket and me have been up north bird hunting. On the way home we stopped at Cross Timbers Gundogs and picked up a new Pudelpointer puppy!(tap photo for full image)

Nice looking pup! Congrats and I look forward to you sharing your adventures!

WillieT,

Congrats on your new pup. Lots of time and effort went into making it happen over the last few years, so it was a special one for me. Please keep us informed as he matures. That pup is lucky to have you as his owner. It will see plenty of birds and go on plenty of adventures!!

Thanks for being such a great person to work with. Also, thanks for turning me on to Case a couple years ago. He will likely have a significant impact on my future goals for years to come.

Good to hear from you Jack! The pup is coming along nicely and is thick as thieves with my wife. Right at three months old now. All legs and ears. Already showing me he has some talent Retrieving bumpers and birds water and land. Already showing me he has a lot of point and seeking the wind with his nose. He moves good and has a lot of spunk. He learns quick! I have a decent recall started. He knows “kennel” and “whoa” already. Pretty good at NO, reliable when I have a flyswatter in my hand. Back to the spunk, he did bite the snot out of me when I made him whoa before going into his kennel to eat. Lol. We quickly sorted that out and I like him. Saturday will see us in the field in some isolated cover, getting him in some wild birds Cricket and I found for him…

Cross Timbers Diesel is figuring out he is a bird dog! I call him “Moon”. I’ve been getting him in wild birds and letting him find and chase them after flash pointing and flushing them. The influence of his point has begun to pull him under and hold him there and he is starting to let me go to the front. He has one pinned here. I think he is about ready for me to shoot a few for him. I’m liking the little guy!

Very Nice. Is he pointing a quail or a woodcock?

Covey of bobwhite quail. I’ve had him in both and he is pointing both.

Had the puppy out in the woods looking for woodcock yesterday with a friend that owns one of Moon’s litter mates. Pups were ran solo to cut down on the grab a$$, each got 2 drops. All told we ran them for about six hours. Pups are around 20-25 pounds now. Still not big enough to crush the heavy cover we put them in yesterday but they both ran pretty good. Moon had six finds and his litter mate had 8 finds. Each pup flushed and chased some, flash pointed and chased some. Both pups also pointed, held, and let us flush a few. Man I like both pups.

Hey WillieT,

I read through your posts from last January. I looks like both pups were coming along on wild birds last season. Glad to hear it! How is this summer's training going so far? I've been training their dam for UT. Got her signed up for this October. She is already steady to WSF and is doing some decent duck searches. I kept two males out of her and Ripsnorter's Shoot and MIss to evaluate for 6 months before deciding which to keep for my program. Hope one or both turn out well.

Both are doing as well as I could hope for Jack. Obedience dialed in and both handle easily in the field. Going good in the water with both. Both have soft mouths. Both have been worked on homers in the uplands. Easy to look sharp on birds in launchers though. Nearest fall NA test to me is not till early December. I have not done any formal tracking work yet. I will have him up north a couple weeks hunting pheasant, Huns, and Sharpies in October. I think he will be well prepared when the real education starts. I’m sure we will bust some birds but there is a fair chance we may shoot some too. I will evaluate after then to see if he is going to need more tracking work after that. I have a feeling wild roosters will give him a good schooling with respect to tracking. Andy is going to have his pup in New Mexico for at least the first month of quail season and we are going back around Christmas. He drew a Bull Elk tag in a coveted unit. He has been out there the last month or so knocking around and will be heading back for another month before season so we should have some good intel….
