South Dakota Pheasant Opener

Postby Dmog » Tue Oct 20, 2020 2:43 pm

Just got back from an amazing 3 day pheasant hunt for S.D. opener. First day was 8 hunters, 6 dogs, 24 roosters started at 10am and done by 12:30. 2nd day was 8 hunters, 5 dogs, 24 roosters started at 10:30am and done by 11:30am. This was on private land around White Lake mostly strips of standing corn and sorghum. Last walk was switch grass and could see the dogs work and point. Ended on a 4 dog point and 4 roosters and 1 hen holding for us. 3rd day just my Pudelpointer and me on walk in hunting near Huron. Started at 10am and had my limit of 3 by 10:45am. Couldn’t believe the high ratio of roosters to hens. 1st day was like 20:1, 2nd day was 15:1, and 3rd day was about 10:1. I was sceptical that they were wild birds with the high ratio of roosters to hens so I started inspecting the nostrils on the birds Dash retrieved. If they were pen raised they didn’t use peeps.

You never have to tell a dog what time to be home, give them the keys, and they never ask for money.

Sounds like fun to me.

I'm in SD hunting now. Hen to rooster ratios are about 1:1 where I am. Far more hens holding for close range shots than roosters but still limits coming easy enough.

I'd say you got into some released birds with the ratios you encountered.
