Well guys... I'm getting a setter.

Postby RowdyGSP » Wed Apr 10, 2019 10:37 pm

I realize this might get me kicked off a versatile dog forum but I'm getting a field trial bred English setter. 3 years old. All the questions I had I liked most of the answers to. It's gonna be a project as the dog has not had much training at all but does point and sort of retrieve. I can nurture a half-assed retrieve. But solid pointing instincts are important to me. I'm beyond thrilled! Pics to come.

That Setter has no idea how lucky it is! I look forward to following along.

Thanks Kenton. Even a year ago if you'd asked me if I'd ever say the words "I'm getting a setter" I'd have probably laughed at you. I think Rowdy will like having another dog again, especially a female. He and Tygh got along at first but then the male stuff started and they became enemies. A nice little female setter he should like.

Definitely. When I have female fosters around I have to "manage" them a lot less than males (my GWP is a male.) In fact the new females become rather obsessed with Gus, and its funny to see them around him while he ignores them like a too-cool older brother.

PS. Don't be surprised if she ends up ruling the roost over Rowdy. I've seen that too. You're in for a lot of fun.

Yeah she currently lives with a heeler and apparently rules the roost over the heeler. So Rowdy's in trouble lol.

Congrats. I grew up quail hunting with setters among other pointing dogs. You are most likely in for a treat. When it comes to style, setters are right at the top of the list.

Thanks guys. She is going to be a fun summer project. I have a lot of work ahead of me. Apparently, she barely knows her name and a recall command. But I'm confident since the good genetics are there that I can work with that. Might mean not doing much fishing this summer and instead concentrate on dog training but that will be good for Misty, as well as Rowdy. Rowdy needs a tune up anyway.

That is about the only thing I'm dreading. The wirehair I rescued was a pretty slick coat except for her beard. So never really dealt with burs. But I have heard baby hair detangler spray works wonders.
