Vizslas with Kids

Postby Emmadirl1 » Thu Jan 07, 2021 3:57 pm

Hello,

Considering a Vizsla as my next dog. Never had a pointer, always had labs, looking for a versatile breed. How do they do with very young children? I assume hyper as puppies but do they mellow out in the house as after a few years? Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated

I do not have V's myself but know several folks who do, and who keep them indoors with their families. My sense of it is that they do make good housedogs and coexist well with family. The V's I have known are very much dialed in to one person and tend to be quite responsive to that person.

Sooo, if that one person is YOU, it is up to you to make sure that the dog understands its place in the family pecking order and understands how it must behave around your children. I suspect you will do just fine.

Yes they tend to be fairly energetic dogs, but any pointing dog worth its kibble will be pretty energetic. With some age on them, the pointing dogs I am familiar with tend to settle down and settle in, especially when they are in a family or home setting. Aside from being principally a one person type dog, the V's I have known have been generally very well balanced mentally.

Probably the breed which seems(to me) to be the easiest to have in the home are Setters, but I have seen competitive field trial dogs(who are about as high energy as it gets) adapt beautifully to a household environment. I kinda think those dogs figured out that they grabbed the brass ring AND hit the lottery all at once and are not about to mess up a good thing.

They make great housedogs if they're exercised. Probably more high-strung than labs but if the kids are kindergarten age or bigger (IE, can watch out and tell the dog to knoick it off) they're fine.
