NAVHDA Weimaraners

Postby Ryan on Sat Jun 24, 2006 8:21 pm

Hey everyone,

I am on a search for my next puppy. I have decided to go with a Weimaraner. I have always liked the look of these dogs even though I have only seen 2 in my life. I have not heard alot of good things about the breed. Alot of people tell me that it is hard to find a good litter of hunting Weimaraners but after a few hours on the internet I have found quite a few.

http://www.regenweimaraners.com is one of the breeders I have found that I really liked. They seem to be doing alot with their dogs not just hunting and show.

I was wondering if you guys could help point me in the direction of any other breeders that participate in NAVHDA or have some exeption versatile Weimaraners.

Due to my hunting areas I am not interested in the big running FT weims that I see out there. I hunt alot of pheasant and my partridge spots are no bigger than a 1/4 secion. A dog that will run 2-300 yards is more than enough and I feel a dog that will get out to 200 yards will be best for me.

Your help is appreciated

Thank you

Ryan

you could go to the kennels section and look in the weim that are listed there. I know there are a few there that a show lines so beware. I would go the the weim club of america and ask them ask well.

not knocking the breed, but these dogs require a lot of exercise and training to be satisfied.....if left alone or ignored too much, they can be destructive....if you do not have a lot of time to spend with this breed, i suggest you select another.......again, not saying they are not nice dogs, but they can be very demanding and they will test you to see if you are the "leader".........

I have the time for the breed. I am not too worried about it. With 2 other dogs to play with runs in the morning and after work plus being inside with the family it should be fine. I also crate my dogs in the day when I am not home for their safety.

Yes, and that is even more reason to get a dog from a good breeder.

Ryan,

I know both Regen and Westened Kennels. I don't think you could go wrong with either kennel; I have seen dogs from both these kennels work. They also both partipate in NAVHDA (as well as field trials and hunt tests).

There are also some really exciting breedings coming up in California that I know of.

I am in southern Alberta. I have talked with a lady from Regen she lives in Vancouver but I would also like to see whatelse is out there.

I think you just described "dogs" in general, if he can't live up to what you said then he doesn't need any breed of dog, he needs a cat.

If I was going to vote aganist a Weim it would be for different reasons than you have mentioned.

obviously you don't know much about weims......they have special needs and take a lot of extra effort, besides having physiological challenges most other breeds don't have....there are a number of reasons many people steer away from this breed....but there are those that find them rewarding to train and own....

If I had to guess I think KYgsp had somthing more along the lines of "They are not so good hunters". I could be wrong.

You are exactly right. I am sure there are some very good ones out there but the pet and show folks have latched on to the breed and a person will really have to search through a lot of garbage to find even a suitable hunting dog.

If he is serious about hunting he will have a much easier time finding a nice hunting dog in a different breed.
