Feeding raw wild game birds to your dog,,,,,thumbs up or do

Postby mastercaster » Sat Sep 08, 2018 2:33 pm

Although I haven't transitioned my griff from kibble to raw food (yet) I still give her turkey necks and chicken backs a few times per week as a treat or as part of a meal to keep her teeth in good shape. I'll be doing a lot of grouse hunting over the next month and I only take the breast meat by doing the 'step on the wings' thing. I'll then cut (fillet) the breast meat off the bones to eat. I'm left with the breast bone and was wondering if I should feed these to my dog ,,,,or am I taking a big chance by allowing her to know what wild game birds taste like? I would hate that she might decide to chomp into one while retrieving. Is it a possibility?

I've never done it or heard of anyone else who has. Would think it could encourage the dog to not only chomp on the bird, but actually eat it. I wouldn't recommend it.
I've had several really good dogs, but none were perfect. Neither am I, so keep that in mind!

That's what I was thinking, as well, yet hunters who go with the raw food program will be feeding their dogs raw chicken and turkey meat, plus parts of their carcass, too. Maybe with domestic birds it doesn't matter??? They won't put 2 and 2 together but that's just a guess on my part.

There's a famous (I guess) trainer who feeds birds and it doesn't seem to harm the dog. Depends on why, when and how.

Anyone that has ever broken or tried to break a bird eater would never and I repeat never, feed a dog wild bird meat.
I just hate seeing birds die of natural causes unless I'm that natural cause.

Train the retreive and you should be fine, Dogs know the difference between being sent on a retreive vs being given a treat. It’s a matter of obedience, the dog should retreive the game kindly regardless of the smell or taste. It should not be eating whatever it finds, whenever it wants.

I agree with "Forest".
Our dogs get the hearts gizzards and livers (not waterfowl livers) from
every bird we shoot.

Forrest +2. The dog catches on pretty fast it gets nothing till the bird has been retrieved. This is exactly how problem dogs are fixed.

I see potential to introduce a serious problem and fail to see a significant upside to it. I expect when and how you fed the parts would make a big difference, but not something that interests me relative to my dogs.

Common practice among us raw feeders is to freeze all wild game for 3 weeks to reduce the possibility of passing along live parasites. You also need to be doubly careful not to feed any shot, dogs don't know to spit them out.

I often feed legs, hearts, and livers, from the birds I bag.

I feed raw chicken or turkey to help with tartar control on the teeth. Never had a dog eat a retrieved bird.

Are we talking about giving a dog whole or nearly whole birds? Or handing him a strip of breast meat or heart while cooking or cleaning birds? There’s a wide gap there.

I think forest and gonehunin are both right.

If you have not done a thorough job of FF then I would say it could be a big mistake.

Well trained dogs should be pretty much programmed to return the bird. So it shouldnt be a problem.

Doc, OK, I need educated, I have ether never heard of not giving dogs waterfowl livers or forgot, so why not?

Waterfowl get into dome nasty (polluted) water and since the liver is the filter of that crap, the liver gets pretty funky.
Just look at waterfowl livers ------ Nasty looking to say the least.
