Heat questions

Postby roosterbrews » Thu May 11, 2017 10:04 am

We have our first female and we are approaching the age where she will have a heat cycle. She is a house dog I was just curious how you all handle the issue. We do have an intact male also so thats another issue. Diapers?

They make doggy diapers and they work pretty good. Be best to find a temporary home for the male. Drive you and him nuts if you don't.

Solid walls will need to separate the dogs during her cycle. I've seen dogs get pregnant through diapers, crates, and chain link. Have seen particularly motivated dogs tear out walls or break windows.

My sister got 14 new Shorthair pups through a chain link fence.

Would you continue walking your dog through her heat cycle ,,,,or is it basically no off the premise exercise or activity? I have a 6 1/2 month griff so her first heat cycle will be upon sooner rather than later.

Supervised exercise is fine. I run mine on our acreage same as always. You just need to be able to get her back if a wandering male should arrive.

We are currently going through this with our 10 month old SM. Luckily for us she isn't a fan of diapers so she's been pretty lethargic for the past week and we know a couple 6 blocks from us with a neutered male that she play with. We are using pull ups instead of dog diapers as they are less expensive and i think a little easier to put on, but the fit isn't perfect so sometimes you gotta get a little creative, and obviously cut a hole for the tail.

I do the same. Except I cut 4 holes in the waist of the pull ups and run a string through it so I can snugg it up.
