Was at the vet the other day getting shots and looking at tick flea meds. The vet said if I'm going to Spay my drahthaar I should do it before her first heat cycle to avoid possible cancer. I told her I read to wait till after her heat cycle. The vet said thatshe the old school way of thinking and itsee better to Spay early. Now I'm confused as to what to do.
Age of spay doesn't affect incontinence, it's all hormones unfortunately.
Waiting after one heat cycle is coming back into favor. There have been a number of studies recently showing delayed spay has some health benefits. We DO NOT know the ideal age to spay. The risk of mammary cancer increases only a tiny bit after one heat cycle. It's a huge jump after the second cycle. So until we learn the best time (it may even vary between breeds) after one heat cycle seems a reasonable compromise.
It is a harder surgery after the first cycle. The best thing you can do to prevent complications is to keep your dog as lean as possible. The difficulty of a spay surgery goes up exponentially with every extra bit of internal fat.
