If You Feed Sweet Potato Treats, Read This !

Postby Doc E » Sat Jul 21, 2012 7:28 pm

Story at-a-glance
In addition to chicken jerky treats made in China, there is also now concern about sweet potato treats and possibly pork treats and cat treats imported from China as well.
Anecdotal reports from veterinarians indicate concerns about sweet potato pet treats made in China. According to the Veterinary Information Network, “Although no evidence is available that these sweet potato treats cause kidney issues similar to those related to chicken jerky treats, pet owners should be aware of the possibility.”
To protect your own dog or cat, avoid feeding any pet food or treat made in China. Homemade treats are easy to make and can give you complete peace of mind that you’re not feeding your pet something potentially toxic.

This DOES NOT say that sweet potatoes are bad (they are a great doggie snack). It is saying that Sweet potato treats made in China are something to avoid.

Thanks Doc.

My personal take is that all vegetable based treats are bad along with foods that contain any type of vegetable based oil listed as an ingredient.

How about a home made treat made with a vegatable based oil?? Do you think Olive oil is better than regular Vegetable oil?

Animal fats are best, but some veggie oils (IMO) are alright for dogs. Olive oil is one of them and believe it or not, so is coconut oil. I'd stay away from lard, as there is evidence that too much pig fat can cause pancreatitis.

Most vegetable oils contain too much Omega-6, which is pro-inflamatory and pro-clot formation.

It's just a personal choice thing for me, no scientific study behind my opinion.

Like I've said so many times, one of my dogs cannot handle Canola Oil at all. I know many dogs handle it okay but why take a chance. I've heard Sunflower Oil is also bad but I have no experience with it.

My GSP's love sweet potatoes, along with cucumbers and string beans right out of the garden. About year ago my girlfriend had given us some sweet potato treats wrapped in some fake meaty stuff. My older dog loved them but I wouldn't buy them for her because I found out they were made in china. In fact I haven't been able to find a sweet potato treat made in the USA. Since I love to cook I make most of my dogs treats. Here's a link to my homemade sweet potato treat recipe if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the recipe Byrdgirl. Why buy these treats? Get a food dehydrator (or your oven) and make 'em yourself and know for sure that they are all-natural and good for your dog. Using an old window you can easily make a piece of equipment to make sun-dried treats.

My Labrador enjoyed quite a few vegetables from our garden. He absolutely loved raspberries and blueberries too, he'd pick only the ripe ones right of the bush.

Guess what idiot dog owner was at Cabelas recently and made the mistake of buying AKC brand Chicken Jerky wrapped Sweet Potato Treats? That's right, this idiot did so. Somehow I totally overlooked the Manufactured in China statement on the package (I normally look very closely at this stuff.) Unfortunately I didn't notice it until I'd used almost the entire bag, fortunately my pup hasn't seemed to have exhibited any symptoms or problems.
