GSP a bucking bronco during ear pinch

Postby acolic on Fri Feb 05, 2010 10:07 am

What a day makes in FF training.

Teaching hold, no problem.
Teaching hold while walking, no problem.
Having the dog sit while I hold his ear big problem.

Without any pressure he's a bucking bronco. His obediance skills are pretty good but for some reason havig him sit while holding his ear is a problem. He's jumping all over the place trying to get lose. The first session was pretty difficult. I've started to try to get him to sit, hold his ear and feed him some small treats to calm him down before we start training. By session three he seems to be improving but still really dosen't like the pressure on the ear.

I hope we move through this stage quickly.

LOL I actually gave up on the sit. Fetching from a stand is working much better.

A real dog trainer would be able to accomplish what you first started. Depending on what you plan for the dog's future work assignments, "sit" may or may not be advantageous but it shouldn't hurt.

Personally, I've trained every dog I ever had (except the first, a setter, which I had for only a short time when I was nine years old) and a few other folks' dogs to sit - Brittany, pointer, beagles, Labs and mutts - w/o any uncomfortable consequences for their other work.

Ross, At what point or age should you FF a pointer?

I don't know. I have 3 dogs in the house now and a gsp pup on the way. If there's enough female in the litter due march 4. ultra sound shows 5 pups. I have 2nd pick of females. I'm chompin for pointer male.
We'll see what becomes of thisgsp litter. The pointer i had before Joey was a handsome powerhouse too. Damascus x a bitch whose sire was Fiddlers Ace x a Gateway Matadur bitch. Murice , when he saw lightning said he looked just like ACE. Murice didn't know Lightning (W/B) was his grandson.
