The tradition of hunting with dogs is under attack

Having been thwarted in their recent attempt to ouster the California Fish & Game Commissioner for participating in a legal mountain lion hunt in Idaho, animal rights extremist groups are now attacking our hunting rights from another angle.

This time they are targeting the tradition of hunting with dogs, specifically the use of dogs to hunt bobcats and bears. California Senate Bill 1221 has been passed in the Natural Resources and Water Committee this week by a vote of 5-3, and now moves the next step to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Although SB 1221 would only outlaw the use of dogs while hunting bobcats and bears, its passing into law would set the stage for future attempts to eliminate the use of hunting dogs for all game, including deer, pheasant, quail, and even ducks & geese.

A California bill to ban the use of dogs to hunt bears and bobcats has stalled in the state Legislature.

Senate Bill 1221, by Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu, fell short of passage in the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife today. The bill was given the OK to be reconsidered next week. It was not immediately clear whether any members were absent or abstained from today's vote...

They had a moretorium and bear hunting back in the 80's. the resulting property damage to vacation homes and mobile homes, orchards and many other things, was so severe, they re-instated it with in two years. Calif has an estimated 25,000 to 30,000+ thousand bears. That is a lot of bears without control. Good luck with that one.
