Prairie Trouts Shockn Oz

I was so pleased when I realized I actually got a picture of his first bird exposure and the ensuing chase that I had to share it with you all. Steve Anker, I've got a separate picture that I need to take for you...

Thanks, it was a lot of fun to meet you and get to know everyone a bit. OKNAVHDA seems like a great chapter and its always nice to find like minded folks in the "hunting and fishing" world who don't mind teaching people that are new to a sport. See you in September!

Oz is now 13 weeks old. We went out yesterday afternoon for his first duck hunt, early teal. It was also my first ever teal specific hunt, I've never lived anywhere that has had a teal season. It was a thrown together adventure, I was out for work near Cheyenne Bottoms and noticed that there was a low pressure system that was hitting and figured I might as well get Oz out and see if we couldn't put a duck in his mouth. All I had with me were some rubber boots, a three legged hunting stool, a motorized dove mojo decoy, and my shotgun. As soon as we started walking out I saw a guy setting up with six teal floaters and three mojos. He had his six bird limit in less than an hour. It took me about 20 minutes to fill my boots up to the brim with water while walking around looking for a good open part of the marsh. Oz did pretty good walking with me although he did not like just standing in the water so I finally set up the chair for him.

After having a couple pairs of teal zoom by I finally got comfortable identifying them. Two more teal came in to land next to the dove mojo about 20 minutes apart. I felt good that after a year off from shooting the 12 ga I only used one shell per bird, only two shells for the whole day, that's economical!! :D

Oz did not mark either bird falling but quickly went into search mode after hearing "dead bird". I was once again thrilled at how quickly he caught on to the "now we're hunting ducks, not dove" thing. After getting his nose full of the first teal he ran off through the cat tails and about a minute later came back with a teal that had obviously been shot and un-recovered sometime in the past week.

It's amazing to me what quality breeding can achieve!

And the obligatory tailgate picture. Oz was too interested in playing with the birds to take a picture with him in it...
