The end is near for Gus and I! Lucky for the chukar.

The end of the Idaho chukar season is fastly approaching and Gus and I are taking every available opportunity to wreak havic on the local chukar population. Season ends Jan 31, and Gus will have +/- 30 full days of chukar hunting, not bad for a 10 month old WPG pup. I have had to invested in costco ibuprofen to get through the season, but it is worth it. As of today, Gus has pointed (solid steady to flush) 76 coveys of birds, most being chukar and a few huns which has resulted in hundreds of shots overhead. We have hunted some of the most amazing, steep, and brutal country while seeing wild horses, coyotes, antelope, mule deer and big horn sheep. The way that Gus behaves not only in the field with other dogs and hunters, but in our house is a true testament to the work that is being done with this breed. Cant wait for his NA test this spring.......... More to come at the end of the season.

Idaho:

Thanks for all the photos etc. First photo.... I have the same shot from the Oregon side....

Going to try and tackle the icy roads and head over your way one of these days. Hunting is really bad closer to home this year. Got one bird on Friday...

Harvey,

The first phot was from yesterday, just south of Mountain Man Lodge on my side. Got into a TON of birds but most were educated. Had 4 covey of huns cooperate, the chukar were all wild except a few pairs. Finding good coveys of unpressured birds in areas I can see from my back patio, Owyhees, Idaho side. Its a count down now till the end, let me know if you head this way and we will meet you on the border.

Nice shots, IG. I may have to make a trip up that way next year. A true cast-n-blast sounds like the ideal way to spend a fall weekend.

Sounds like just the beginning to me.
You're not having any fun are you?

There's a grif missing in your Hun photo. He was probably behind you pointing more birds.
Thanks for sharing.

after 76 covey's the NA should be like a day off.
I have opinions of my own-strong opinions-but I don't always agree with them

Cant wait till the bird numbers rebound. The good old days of 3 plus years ago, were really something. When My Ellie was a pup, she was on probably close to 375 coveys in 25 days of hunting..... That's how good it was back then. Kind of got spoiled...... That quality of hunting is probably a couple of years away even in perfect nesting conditions. We need a dry spring.......
