ABC News reported it was aminopterin that may have been on imported wheat used in the pet food. Aminopterin is used to kill rats in some countries but is not registered for that use in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The chemical, also a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses. (from http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/ ... 56004.html Houston Chronical Article)

How does that happen :?:
\

By using cheap ingredients from unregulated markets. In this case wheat from China.

Menu Foods has stated that the tainted pet food showed up after they switched wheat suppliers. It sounds like they choose a supplier based on price. This new supplier is probably cheaper b/c it cuts corners, like skipping quality control measures that would have tested the wheat for impurities or storing wheat in poor conditions that would allow it to come into contact with rat poison.

Cut quality and you hurt your customers every time!

more food recall

Postby Christie » Sat Mar 31, 2007 3:09 pm

Now they think it is Melamine...

Anyway, Hills Prescription diet m/d for Cats has been recalled: 4 lb. bag, U.S. & Canada UPC code 52742 42770; 10 lb. bag, U.S. & Canada UPC code 52742 42790.

Purina has also recalled Alpo Dog foods: 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce Alpo Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can Alpo Prime Cuts Variety Packs with four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" (if you are feeding this to your dogs, you should really switch to something better)

Expect more voluntary recalls as pet food manufacturers realize buying cheap, quality control-free ingredients doesn't pay off.

I wouldn't be suprised to see this ending up in human foods as well. Funny thing is that the Chinese company that made the wheat gluten said "They" never exported to the United States... so what company In China is the other middleman.... and Who owns that company? The things that make you go Hmmmmmmmm?! :-k

DeanD - It has been reported that some of the same wheat gluten went to a un-named human food processing plant, but that they had no evidence of contaminated wheat gluten in human food.

The good news is humans are said to be less sensitive to the contaminant.

April 10th recall items out of Canada

Postby Christie » Wed Apr 11, 2007 11:54 am

Menu foods stated they were shocked they used the tainted gluten in other plants. If by 'shocked', they mean 'we didn't realize how our poorly managed supply chain practices would kill thousands of pets', then I see their point. I'm still waiting for the report that they have fired the people responsible for this mismanagement.

I think these are all cat foods but maybe small dog foods too:

Americas Choice and Stop & Shop Companion,
Preferred Pet Flaked Tuna 3oz Can

Your Pet and Pet Pride,
Sliced Beef/Gravy 3oz Can
Sliced Variety Pack 3oz Can

Laura Lynn and Publix,
Flaked Tuna 3oz Can
Sliced Beef/Gravy 3oz Can

Nutriplan, Winn Dixie and Price Chopper,
Sliced Beef/Gravy 3oz Can

Nutro Products
Chicken Cacciatore 3oz Can
Orleans Seafood Jambalaya 3oz Can
Beef Ragout 3oz Can
Alaskan Halibut/Rice 3oz Can
Kitten Chicken/Lamb 3oz Can
California Chicken 3oz Can
Lamb/Turkey Cutlets 3oz Can
Salmon/Whitefish 3oz Can
Beef/Egg 3oz Can
Turkey/Chicken Liver 3oz Can
Seafood/Tomato/Bisque 3oz Can
Hunters Stew with Duck 3oz Can
Hunters Stew with Venison 3oz Can

In the news here yesterday the CFO of Menu foods is being investigated for unloading a bunch of stock shortly before the recall was announced. The CFO says the stock sale is a 'horrible coincidence'.
