One of North America’s largest pet-food suppliers said today it would recall some of the premium dog and cat food it sells through stores such as Wal-Mart and Safeway at a cost of up to $40 million after several animal deaths in the United States.

Menu Foods Income Fund (TSX:MEW.UN), based in Mississauga (streetsville), west of Toronto, called the recall of its products sold in cans and pouches precautionary.

CEO Paul Henderson told The Canadian Press that exhaustive tests by both internal and external specialists had failed to identify the problem.

The foods afected are all "wet" (canned or in those little pouches). Dry food is not included in the recall.

Isn't that all "crap" food anyway?

I'd feel bad feeding most of this to barn mice...

That's what I was thinking. On a site like this, I seriously doubt many use the foods specified. It's more of a pet only lapdog types of food it looks like.

I think they also make higher end (not highest) canned food but they are not included in the recall.

2 more pulled. Purina and Hills.

This one company seems to make all the wet food brands for the whole market. Purina, Iams, Ukanuba, Hills, Nutro, plus all the private label stuff.

To date one dog died and several cats. They have found nothing to connect the deaths with the food yet.

Millions of pets are eating their products daily. Surely thousands of these dogs die every day too from a multitude of causes.

Unless Menu Foods knows something they aren't telling, I would say they completely jumped the gun on the recall.

They did know something.....

"Menu Foods told the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that it received the first complaints of kidney failure and deaths among cats and dogs from pet owners on Feb. 20. It began testing to find the source on Feb. 27.

During those tests, the company fed its product to 40 to 50 dogs and cats and seven animals — the mix of species was not immediately known — died, said Stephen F. Sundlof, the FDA’s top veterinarian. "

They don't know what the cause is , just that 1 in 7 dogs die after eating the stuff.

PET FOOD IS LITERALLY POISON!

Postby Christie » Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:59 am

The Pet food is tainted with RAT POISON!

ABC News reported it was aminopterin that may have been on imported wheat used in the pet food. Aminopterin is used to kill rats in some countries but is not registered for that use in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The chemical, also a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses. (from http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/ ... 56004.html Houston Chronical Article)
