Lot of VJP's still to take place. How far along are you on "the trained retrieve"?

Considering it now. My pup has done nothing but hunt, so I've got a long ways to go.

I should have picked an earlier VJP, ours is not until late May. Provided we score well we are going to have a lot of training to do before October

I did the same with Ari, Vegas HZP training took most of my time. All Ari knows is here, sit, and hold. The days are getting longer, we have time. I'm more worried about finding time to VGP Vegas.

Go ahead and get your force fetch done before VJP. If you wait you will be up against the clock. I thinks it very reasonable to think a proper ff dog could get ready for an hzp in 6 weeks of consistent work. If you happen to have a hiccup with ff you aren't leaving yourself much time.

Yeah, I think you can work your FF now instead of waiting until after the VJP. I FF'ed 2 dogs prior to their VJP without any ill affects. One scored a 69 and the other a 74.
If you are worried about it affecting the track, then dont use rabbits until after. But I just see benifits to getting it done now instead of waiting.

Disclosure is I am not pro trainer. I just have 5 dogs under my belt with FF. The biggest thing is you have to be able to read your dog and not make every session an A$$ kicking session. As long as you are firm and FAIR, you should be ok.

All 5 pups from my kennel that tested so far are qualified with 3 more to test still. I know at least 3 of the 5 are already making plans.

We ( i ran my dad's pup) qualified with a 71. Coat is great but she's missing a P4 so we are out but i may try to apprentice there.

Training for HZP/VGP now. she's solid with FF and working on force to pile at about 50 yards now. doing 200-300m drags now without problems . We will start waterwork very soon.

Good luck to all that are going.

Don't have a pup in the game this year, but unless your pup is one of the 7-8mo pups in VJP, there's plenty of time for a good pup to prepare for a fall test.

Trained retrieve shouldn't take that long, and the polishing of the manners is the most important thing.

The big thing is tailoring the method of training to the dog and peaking at the right time.

Regardless of the outcome of next month's VJP, I don't think the Armbruster is in the cards for us. The timing just doesn't work out because the GSP nationals start the following Monday so an early September date works much better for the schedule.

As for the vgp, I'm going to make it a 2 year prep and test at 3.5 yrs old because there's too much I hunting I want to do and only so much time

California Versatile,
A lot depends on the mental stability of the dog, but if you start out training for the VGP from the beginning...it really isn't much more work than preparing for the HZP. Doing them the same year also involves one less year of training. I did an HZP/VGP the same weekend and will never do that again, but I'm going into every new dog as if I'm doing VGP in the HZP year. It's the most common way of training in Germany and they have a lot of success...even with very young pups.

Are you saying the HZP and VGP can be done in the same year?
