I live in AZ similar terrain to NM. Maybe I am doing this wrong but I only walk along the tops of the gullies and arroyo and send my dog down to look for the birds? I only walk down when he finds them. 95 percent of where I hunt if my dog was 300 yards away I would never know where he was let alone if he was on point. But one thing holds true if the dog is 800 yards away and has not found any birds you will still need to walk that 800 yards plus to get a bird. Maybe you should just get the dog you want and join a hunt club for a year so you and your new dog can get some easy birds until you get an idea of any limitations you might have.
