Best age for spaying?

Postby mastercaster » Mon Jun 26, 2017 8:30 am

Looked through a few of the categories and couldn't find people's opinion on this so I thought I start a new thread. My griff is now six months old and the vet suggested spaying her before her first heat cycle. I booked a tentative appointment to get it down in a couple of weeks but was wondering if I should wait? Are they're any significant disadvantages of getting in done this early?

If memory serves I got my last brit done thirty years ago at this age and she went onto being a great dog who hunted heart out. She had no health issues and lived until she was 17.

Mastercaster:

Do not under any circumstances listen to your vet. In fact, find a new vet. He/she does not have your dogs health as a priority. There's been a ton written here over the years on the subject so the archives are your friend.

This is my first dog say take what I say with a grain of salt.

Our SM is currently 9 months old and we'll be waiting until at least 12 months to spay, would have waited longer but she has a hernia that will be addressed at the same time and the wife wants this done before the snow flys so she can go to doggie daycare. Most vets recommend the 6-7 month range to avoid unwanted pregnancies, this is when recovery is typically the easiest, and the increased chance of breast cancer. I haven't looked at other breeds, but within the SM community every breeder I've come across says no spaying our neutering before 14 months as there is now some science that indicates a possible link between early spay/neuter and hip dysplasia. I've had one breeder tell me I should wait until at least 18 months because while the skeletal structure finishes developing around 12-14 months, the muscular system doesn't finish until 18 months. But that same breeder also said that for non working/house dogs you can spay at 7 months since they won't be putting their bodies under the same kind of strain as a working/hunting dog.

5 pound useless yorkie poos can be spayed early. But you havae an athlete and he needs his hormones to make him strong and prevent injuries. My contract says 13 months for females and 18 months for male. Males are longer because they are less hassel.

Vets are not always thinking about the athletic dog, but more the family pet.
