What's in a name. Need to pick one from three.

Postby Dsgordon » Wed Apr 05, 2017 8:15 pm

This is my first post. I will be bringing home our first GSP pup in a week. She will be first and mostly our family pet. But she will also be my new hunting partner and fishing companion. She will be my first trained for hunting gun dog. I have a summer of NAVHDA training planed. We have narrowed the name down to three choices. I am having trouble deciding and breaking any ties.

1. Nova
This one is young family members favorite but I have concerns around the No sound in name. Although I don,t use no in training much its natural to use as a negative marker. It's a little unusual to me but that might be a good thing.

2. Penny
2nd family choice in order of most who favor it.

3. Ivy
My favorite as it's similar to other dog names I used.
I like the outdoors sound of it it too.

Any one care to vote and help us choose. Why thy may like or dislike any of the three.

Penny has my vote. You Can also shorten it to "Pen", as one syllable names seem to be easier than multiple syllable names.

Not Nova, for the reason you bring up.

Ivy is good too, but not as good as Penny to my ear. it doesn't start with a hard consonant and it doesn't shorten to one syllable. We had a wonderful old Molly-girl until very recently and she was just Mol from very early on.

2 cents delivered, take them for what they are worth. Have fun with your pup...pictures please, when available.

Agree with Bhennessy. And, the Nova is a really ugly shotgun.

As a derivative of Ivy, I vote for Iver

Yes. And not that it matters or that anyone cares, but I hate gun names for dogs. It always seemed a bit like the high schooler who wears camo to class so everyone knows he's a hunter.

I had forgot about the shot gun name. Hadn't relay thought of Nova as hunting name.

The idea of Nova as name did not come from a gun, the car or the PBS TV show.
More it was searching dog names and the meaning in Latin.
Canis Nova (Feminine of New Dog ).
Maybe a little bit from a classic SF POTA Movie character. Its been on TV a lot lately.

Wife does not like Ivy so down to Penny and Nova.
Nova is wining in family voting.
We will be picking her up next week.
Looking like Nova could be it.

I have been trying to decide if I should get a Garmin sport pro e-collar now because of the rebate.
Figuring that in a couple of months I probably be looking to get one.

Instead of using 'no' for a command , use 'DON'T'

I vote for Nova ... sounds like a star is born.

Props! I considered Nova for mine last year. It was close. Although I fondly remember the automobile of that name, I was thinking more a character in a book.

I'll probably use that or Friday on my next pup.

Killed lots of birds with my super nova. They died all the same.

Ugly gun. Ugly dog. Ugly owner. At least I'm consistent.

I wonder if "Nova" is too close to NO? I just went through the dog naming thing. I like Ivy but my buddy has one already. We ended up naming her Tilly. The Tilly hat reflects quality and the outdoors.
As for which E-collar? The Dogtra 2500 T&B is the one you want. Fabulous unit with a very small near indestructible beeper.

Thanks,
This was an excellent suggestion. Its kind of natural to say Don't just like no.
Were using it.

I don't think the dog will get confused with NO and Nova. Most dogs do fine with No and Whoa, which to me seems much more alike.

I like Nova. You can lengthen it to Super Nova.

Nova looks like the birds already fear her.
