March 18 2017

I'm seeing a few singles and very small flocks and they are all calling a lot. The snow is gone in the last 2 days, the wind is warm and blowing hard from the SW. My guess is that it the wind comes hard from the south that they will just pass through. The streams are running, bigger water will open very soon.

Thus we see the rub with a spring shoot. Lots of mud and maybe no birds.

What ever happens, we won't have to wait long.

1700 hrs, March 18, they are here, a pair standing in the yard! That is North of 51 Lat.

Game on. BTW the mud is ankle deep. There is about 1 foot of black top soil and it soaks up the water so it can grow a crop, at this time of year you can't even walk across it. The geese have no trouble. Some honkers just landed, the wind has backed a bit more out of the south and still blowing hard.

It's Canada Goose Central here as of this morning. I saw eight different groups in the hour that I was out with the dog. No huge flocks, just smaller flocks, and pairs and triples. One pair was walking around on the ice and the dog pointed them for me. :)

Yep, saw the first pair of Honkers yesterday.

Densa were you around these parts about 8-10 years ago when we got 10 days with 2 feet of snow and -30 weather in early april? The robins came through pretty good, but killed off every single bluebird. The fall before we had 30+ bluebirds gathered in the yard for the fall migration. All 8 pairs around the yard were back that spring prior to the snow. It was 6 years before I saw a bluebird again. Last summer a pair nested in the yard. I need to get the boxes cleaned out. Nature is harsh in this part of the country.

March 23; Dense fog this am and geese everywhere but very few snows. They are not here yet and I worry they may not even land.

Report of several sections covered in snows in a certain part of ND. Heading my way there now to do my part in protecting the tundra.

You're welcome Canada

As a favour could you fellows shoot as many as possible?

The Canada geese keep arriving every day. No snows or white fronted geese yet, but plenty of Canadas. A flock of crows also arrived yesterday, and the Hungarian Partridge are pairing off.

The first flock of ducks showed up here this morning, too far away to tell which species.

Lots of ducks both on the water and in the fields. A small flock of swans, more geese in pairs, but still no snows to speak of. Maybe the members who live farther east can tell us what they are seeing.

I have been outside all morning and haven't seen nor heard a flight yet today. Yesterday and the day before the skies were alive.

Just east of Camrose the fields were white this morning. Thousands of snows.
