DD Tattoo Question

Postby JONOV » Wed Feb 01, 2017 9:18 am

A neighborhood guy has a wirehaired bearded dog that he got in a horsetrading deal for some work done for a guy with a dozen dogs who mostly field trialed and supposedly didn't have time for her (allegedly). I was talking to his wife, who said "I'm trying to find more about her, she has a tattoo in her ear." I told her to look at the vdd-gna website. Is there a means to backtrack to the pedigree from the ear tattoo? Can they still register as owners with the VDD-GNA?

Contact the Breed Warden for the Chapter you are located. Have the number in hand. They should be able to help you track it backward. Then ask them about ownership registration.

Duckdon is correct. Anyone can look up the number if they have the breed book for the year the dog was whelped, but a breed warden will be the best contact if you don't know a long term breeder in your area.

That answers the first question. As to the second question, that would depend on where the Ahnentafel (pedigree) is and the owner of the dog as shown on that Ahnentafel. It is actually supposed to go with the dog when ownership is transferred and signed over to the new owner with each transfer. The breeder as determined from the Breed Book should be able to help with that if a valid legible tattoo number can be determined, also if the dog was born within the last few years it may also have a chip and a Chapter Breed Warden would most likely have a chip reader. Other options might be available once those questions are answered. Good luck with your search!

Which ear? (Not that that mistake hasn't been done before).

How many digits?

This could narrow it down to false alarm.

Otherwise, yes the breed books.

And, considering the story I wouldn't put much faith in the Ahnentafel being signed over... it's only German law that pedigree and dog are a single, legal entity to the best of my recollection.
