best small dog

Postby oldtimer » Fri Jan 20, 2017 12:14 pm

My wife wants a small dog for "her". Just curious as to anyones opinion on which small dogs are friendly and healthy AND as lazy as possible. ;) My bird dogs have plenty for everyone. :)

Doesn't exist, you can get small, friendly and healthy or small, friendly and lazy.

Maybe pugs, frenchies, or Yorkies. All popular so you would have to do some work in the healthy part to find a good breeder.

If you are looking for a lazy ass house dog, Shihtzu. I grew up with them and Yorkies, but the shihtzu is a great lazy-snuggle-puff-ball.

Yorkies lay around a lot too, but they are terriers so they tend to hunt things if there is anything to hunt, and they tend to be territorial. If you ever get a mouse in the house, they won't relax... ever.

There was a Corgi pup in our OB class. It was friendly, cute, obedient and calm. Not sure if they suffer many health issues or not and they may be larger than you are looking for.

Pomeranian's are pretty healthly and relatively easy to live with. But boy, can they chirp.

Avoid anything with a short nose - pugs, bostons.

Slightly shorter nose like Shih Tsu is ok, I find their temperament variable. Some are very easygoing, some are manipulative little turds.

For a chill temperament, my favorite dog hands down is the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Prone to heart disease, use a breeder that health tests only.

For a medium energy dog, pomeranians and papillons tend to be healthy and easy to get along with.

I've met a couple of Pomeranians that had great personality. I've never met a pug I didn't like, but can't speak to their health issues.

Patterdale, Jack Russel, Scottish, Kerry Blue....for starters.

I was going to put some terriers but he said as lazy as possible.

I would add Fox and Welsh terriers as well.

Agreed, all healthy and fabulous choices- but none are lazy.,,

I havent seen one in a long time but many yrs ago we had a Cairn Terrier. A bit aloof and independent, somewhat territorial, otherwise smart, didnt wander too far, moderatley active. Lived 14 yrs. Very good dog.
