Point & Flush dog team

Postby Cld22 » Fri Dec 09, 2016 11:06 am

So I had the pleasure of going on my first bird hunt ever! It was a ladies only pheasant hunt for new hunters. I wasn't sure if there would be dogs as the flyer made no mention of them. Well I was excited to find out there would be several dogs( we broke into multiple groups). The first half of the day I went with a guide who used an English Setter and a Lab as a team. The second half of the day we were with a guide and his GWP who said he uses his lab to flush and they work as a team also. Is there anyone out there that uses a bird dog team as well? I didn't bring any birds home but I did get multiple opportunities to shoot, I am almost certain that I would have had one, if I had remembered that I had already used my last shot....rookie move for sure. The funnest part though was watching all the dogs work :D

Why use two dogs when one does it all?
I just hate seeing birds die of natural causes unless I'm that natural cause.

Welcome, always great to have new hunters especially one from the distaff side.

Some of us use more than one dog not just to flush (it is frowned upon by some in the versatile community, like my son). I use 3 dogs and they work together and often they are able to get a running bird to stop, and then they stop too.

I'm old, fat and hobble, so for me it is a big help.

I've started bringing my Patterdale along for the flush works well aside from the fact I have to keep her on leash or she'll hunt fur.

Betting you've got the only Patterdale birddog in North America - does Brian Plummer (or his ghost) know about this?

PS Thought about a Wheaten a while back, still would consider if good bird numbers were also part of the equation.
