Doggy KEVLAR? What's your TICK preventitive?

Postby Steve Anker » Mon Apr 07, 2014 6:21 am

Aye VeeeeeDawgerz-

What is the jammy for this seasons ticks? What has come out recently and does the job on TICK preventitive?

If there isn't something NEW and IMPROVED we're sticking to ADVANTIX II. Tried and true, but we are open to ideas.......We buy it by the case load.

We found a couple of the crawlee buggers this weekend........already!

Advantix is far too greasy in my opinion, I like to be able to have my dog in the house again after a few hours.

I'm a big fan of the new amitraz collars. Cheap, work great, lasts a couple months. The downside is they are deadly if eaten so you have to pick the dogs that are trustworthy.

Great timing, I've been pulling them off for the past week. We used Parastar with fipronil last fall with success, but I'll wait to see how this thread plays out before I re-order.

Frontguard has just released a chewable that I'm trying out this year. I'll let you know how it goes.

I've always used Advantix II and it has served me very well. Until it stops working I'll stick with it.

I have been very happy with the results of Vectra-3D.
Seems to do a good job of repelling ticks, and those that do attach (very rare and then ONLY at the end of the treatment cycle) are always found dead.

Down side is it is only available through veterinarians which limits price competition, which keeps the prices up compared to other similar products.
But IMO still worth the cost.

Amitraz - the Preventick collar, I think there's a couple more brands too. I like it in combination with frontline, gives it a faster knockdown so the ticks don't make it to the car. Similar to the effect you get with Advantix but without the grease.

At less than $15 and lasting three months, it's a good investment.

Here's a comparison chart - for fleas but covers all the tick products except what is new this year.

Again only available from a veterinarian, so if available from yours they can provide more information.

I'm watching this one too. We had several ticks on us yesterday.

I just looked up the Vectra 3-D and apparently it's just another Permethrin based product.
Nothing wrong with that, other than as MissK mentioned, it is kind of greasy.
The other problem with Permethrin based products...some fleas and ticks become resistant to it.
From what I read about it, it doesn't look any different than Bio-Spot, which you can buy over the counter about anywhere.
http://www.drugs.com/vet/vectra-3d.html

I've always used Frontline and it works good at killing ticks, but it does nothing to repel them.
Parastar is just another company's name for Frontline so it probably doesn't repel either.
http://www.parastarpet.com/product_details.html

The Amitraz collars, (sold under the name Preventic), probably work good, as it's the same chemical used in dips for mange,
BUT, I was hoping they would work for just field work. It'd be nice if you could just slip it on when you're heading out into areas you would expect to encounter ticks, and then take it off when you get home, but that doesn't seem to be the case according to this...:
"The collar should be removed when you bath or wash your dog, and be replaced when your dog is dry. It will take up to 24 hours for the collar to re-establish protection"
http://www.petshed.com/petcyclopedia/al ... ollar.html

I just don't like the idea of that much chemical hung around the dogs neck IN the house.
Just a thought...

I don't have any experience with the other Permethrin products, but I normally apply the Vectra 3D topical at night right before I go to bed.
My dog is crated at night, and by the next morning the greasy-ness is almost completely gone.
But that is my experience with 1 GSP. This may be driven by the fact that she has a short thin coat which may allow the product to absorb quicker.
