Turkish Pointers?

Postby chiendog » Mon Jun 17, 2013 8:30 am

Nope, this is not about using Pointers to hunt Turkeys (although I am sure it could be done...), this is about a kind of pointing dog from Turkey:

Until very recently the Turkish Pointer, a.k.a. the Tarsus Catalburun, was completely unknown to hunters outside of Turkey. Today, most people still know nothing about it, even in its homeland.

Thanks for the blog, Chien. Very cool. Is the the Turkish Pointer also referred to as the split-nosed pointer? I have heard of split-nosed pointers before and they look quite similar.

The terms "split nosed pointer" or double nose pointer are found in the old literature and in some modern sources. Basically it refers to a trait (bifid nose) that can happen in any breed. In most breed standards however it is listed as a severe fault and avoided like the plague. But in one or two breeds, for whatever reason, it became a trait that was selected for. So, ya, the Catalburun (Turkish Pointer) has a split nose, just like the Pachon Navarro. And it is my suspicion that they are basically the same breed. Somehow, some Pachones made their way from Spain to Turkey and developed into that local variety.

And they probably are descendants of the Navarro. No one knows for sure, but they are probably descendants of dogs brought to Turkey from Spain, probably around the 1930s.

HA!

Actually I had a trip booked to Turkey, but ended up cancelling. It was scheduled for right at the tail end of a loooooong trip and we just couldn't face another airport/hotel/week in the wild. We headed home instead. So I've never actually seen a Turkish Pointer, but I've seen plenty of Pachon Navarro's which are, for all intents and purposes, the same thing.

Nope, not that I know of. I spoke to a friend of mine in Spain who breeds them and asked him that very question the other day (Skype rules!!). He said that he is unaware of any Pachon ever being exported to North America. 99% of the breed (probably something like 3-4K individuals) is in Spain. The other 1% is probably in Portugual and maybe a few more in southern France.

I posted an update to the Turkish Pointer post explaining it's Spanish connection, double nose and hunting style.
