AKC Pointing Breed Gun Walking Dog Championship

Postby bluestemkennels » Mon Apr 07, 2014 8:42 am

Kudos to the winners of this event. The trial grounds are relatively close to us and we go there to test AKC tests and to participate in walking field trials from time to time.

Looks like the v-dogs did alright.

What I particularly like is the hour long format.

I was down at Jon's last spring with my pup. She wouldn't pick up a freshly killed bird. Jon gave me all sorts of suggestions, none of which worked. Finally he took over and, I kid you not, thirty seconds later she had the bird in her mouth and was proudly showing it off to everyone. It was magic. Dog whisperer is right.

Nope, no griffondoodles at this one, maybe someday. Did place a number of times with my BB while she was a derby dog, however.

Good fun.

In my WISH BOOK...is the WISH that AKC recognizes a WALKING TRIAL as just that. With an additional Title for a WALKING CHAMPION, say WC monicker to show WALKING as a Field Trial Champion.
It does two things
(ONE). It shows a Championship Performance recognized by a TITLE.

(TWO), and most important....It shows that they are NOT equivilant to a HORSEBACK CHAMPION.....

AFC, FC means a Horseback Championship, well, it used to be. SEPERATE and Distinct...to please everyone, not just LUMP em all together. I get infuriated when my locals say they have a Field Championship when all they've run was WALKING STAKES.....really disturbs me.
Especially when mine will hang out on an edge, layout a big run, all the while handling like they were on remote....only to have to run with a souped up HUNT TEST Dog.

Howzzat hurt anyone.....the additional TITLE?
It keeps my sanity for sure.
Keeps the short ranged folks afoot.
Leaves me and my Longtailers to run unfettered.
Seperates the meek from the monsters.

Kick it around wiffff your A-TEAM.

Well.....theres always American Field, they've got it right.

I don't necessarily disagree......they should be distinctly different from the perspective of range given the mode of conveyance of the handler. Getting to point 600 yards away (assuming you could even see it) on foot, probably isn't realistic in any consistent manner.

Sure would like to see more walking events.

it's been talked about Steve, and I agree with you! Suggestion... get on the horn and give Doug Ljungren a call. Then get it talked up a bunch by as many as possible.

The biggest problem (believe it or not) is their computer system and the ability to track the titles as separate. I know, sounds crazy but it's true!

I think the "WC" would be a good idea. This would allow the horizon screamers to show what we all know to be true...that as soon as the handler is on foot, these dogs automatically adapt to walking distance....FC and WC would be a good combo. It would also allow buyers to better identify what they are buying.

Makes sense to me.

Yo Jon.....

You left out the most important FACT about an additional TITLE-
That's the Hunt Test Show people can earn a Title geared for THEM.....and keep em away from ME, my HORSE, and my LONGTAILzz!

I thought Ross Callaway proved that by running the #5 All Age Dog in the country last year through two NAVHDA tests, prizing both times, once with a maximum score.

(TWO), and most important....It shows that they are NOT equivalent to a HORSEBACK CHAMPION.....

This is the sentiment of every horseback trialer I know. Personally, I would love to see more walking events, however many of the dogs I have seen at these events have obtained their FC's in horseback competition.

AMEN Deacon AMEN......

callaways NAVHDA FTer's ain't the ONLY dual purpose hounds out there.
My OWN Pointer, GRITZ was an awesome GROUSE woods dog. When I was afoot she'd change range immediately, handling for the gun. She retrieved too, all this proven by her many AKC Master Hunter Q's.
