Well...that sucked!!

Postby Duckdog17 » Sun Jun 01, 2014 9:15 am

I had my shoulder surgery on Friday morning. I feel a little better this morning, but OMG what a miserable experience.
Other than having wisdom teeth cut out, this was my first surgery.
My daughter has absolutely got me beat all to heck in that department, and it sure reinforces my thoughts on what a tough little girl she is!

They started me off with a nerve block. I watched a path of nerves they pointed out for me on a monitor, while they ran a hypodermic the size of a samurai sword up under my clavicle, and then injected it to deaden the whole left side.
To say it "hurt like hell", would be putting it mildly.
By the time they wheeled me back to the OR, that arm was totally paralyzed.
THAT is a very strange feeling! You have absolutely no control of that arm after that.
Nothing...you can't even wiggle your fingers!
Even reaching down and touching it with my right hand, it felt like I was touching someone else's arm. Phantom itches and cold that doesn't exist.
Just damned strange!
And, I'm not sure what they rammed down my throat,...but I feel violated!!

The nerve block wore off about 3:30 Saturday morning...that sucked too.
All of a sudden...I was feeling it. Owwwwwwww....

They've got me all strapped into a sling set up that has a cushion between my arm and my torso. With a nifty little red ball at my fingertips that I'm supossed to squeeze now and then. Jäger wants me to throw it.
Dogs absolutely amaze me...
Jäger has been incredible since I got home. I've never let the dogs up on the furniture, but his way of shortcutting that, has always been to crawl up on me and lay there with just his back tippy toes touching the ground.
That was really my only concern with him,...that he'd jump up on me like I allow him to do any other day.
Only twice, has he placed a paw up on the arm rest of my chair to test the waters or ask permission so to speak.
Other than that,...he's just camped out next to me.
They just know,...and THAT amazes me!

I also woke up from surgery with an iceman unit wrapped around my shoulder and arm.
It's basically a small cooler unit that you fill with ice, then top it off with water, and then it pumps and recirculates up through tubing that connects to the wrap.
It helps a lot!!
The sleep situation REALLY sucks. I have to sleep sitting up in my recliner. I've never been one of those guys who can just sleep anywhere. So, right now, I'm just kind of taking 1-2 hour naps around the clock.
So,...there's that! I figured I'd let you guys listen to me whine and cry this morning.
Only one direction to go from here!!!

DD17.... You should be completely cheered up and pain free with all the positive encouragement. If it were only that easy......

Been through some incredible stuff myself. You learn to do some things one time for the experience. Really dumb if you do them twice....

Speedy recovery....

Yea...
If it were only that easy.. I sure wish!! This is a whole new level of "suck"!!
I do appreciate them however!!

I'm starting to see, that my biggest opponent is goIng to be...
Me!
I've just never ran at "idle" real well. I've already caught myself doing crap I shouldn't instead of asking for help.
I'm really going to have to make a conscious effort when it starts feeling better, or I'm going to wind up ruining everything they fixed.
I sure wish I had this much free time while healthy!!!
And,so does Jäger!! :)

Thanks Harv,
Kevin

Thanks for askin!

I'm afraid it's still just a whole bunch of 'nothin' going on here.
I've still got a solid 2 1/2 weeks of keeping everything immobile before I can even think of moving, let alone rotation.

I seem to have taken a slight step backwards in the pain department.
I've found a few different blogs where people have documented their recovery from this type of surgery, and some have reported this exact same thing.
Who knows...?
I pulled a real dumbass move last week that I'm sure didn't help matters...

I'd went out to feed and water my homing pigeons, which was my ONLY activity of the day.
My normal protocol is to open up the aviary and the ones that want to fly take off.
Then, I close it up and open the regular door to feed and water.
Only, this time when I opened the regular door, two young birds decided this was the day to make their first flight.
They blew out of there like they'd planned an escape!!
No big deal...right?
One hooks up with the older birds and flys off to check out the world.
The other makes a lazy circle of the back yard and then lands on top of the chain link fence...
Again...no big deal,...right?
Out of the corner of my eye, I see the white rocket of death blasting toward the resting pigeon...
Penny, our JRT.
She launches herself about 3' back from the fence and nails the unsuspecting pigeon.
Completely disregarding my commanding, " NOOOOOOOO!!"

(This is where the dumbassery ensues)
Instead of just logically thinking it through and coming to the deduction that it's just a stupid bird whose days are more than likely numbered anyway,...
Instincts took over and I attempted to hurdle the dang fence to get back inside the yard to save this stupid bird!!
I guess I was probably about half way over when the top rail was digging into places I'd rather it not, when I realized,...
"Wait a minute...I only have one arm!!!"
My dismount to the other side wasn't what you'd call "graceful" and I landed on my butt.
I didn't land on my bad shoulder, but the whole fiasco hurt it anyway.

At this point, I'm not only mad at Penny, I'm pretty upset with myself.
Apparently, I'd finally got my point across to Penny, as she was tuck tailing it to the house with a mouth full of feathers.
That's when Jäger decides to make things right...

He runs over, scoops up the bleeding yet still alive pigeon, then delivers it to me as gently as you could want.
(Believe it or not, I think the stupid bird's gonna live)

All for a dang bird!!!
I still can't believe I did that...
