day pack for big game hunt

Postby woodboro » Tue Nov 01, 2016 6:00 pm

I am looking for a day back - pack for a big game hunt. Carries water jugs, rope, maybe a knife, basics climbing in the mountains.
I was in Walmart , Dunham's and nothing of any value.

I don't need a pack right now for carrying meat out , but am open to that discussion as well.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Crooked Horn Outfitters - Master Guide II that I like and use mainly for Treestand hunting because it has a sturdy loop at the top that I use to hang on the side of the tree and it has a spotting scope vertical compartment where I place my quiver down in and can get to a 2nd arrow easily if need be. It is the 2nd one of that brand that I have purchased. The first one held up very well and I still use it as a waterfowl hunting pack.

Then I have Eberlestock pack that I use out west. It is a little bigger and has a gun sleeve and straps to attach a bow. Very high quality in my view.

Not sure what your budget is but I run a Kifaru for big game hunting and wouldn't go any other way. Pricey up front but you'll end up with a quality pack likely for life.

Great sight , thanks for the link , would be best for elk...
During my long search I have found a neat day pack GX4 speed day pack from Gander Mountain. (new product) I think its the one for my big game day hunts.

I have a Kuiu Ultra 1800. I haven't really put it through the paces yet, but so far so good. Very light carbon fiber frame and you can also buy 3000 and 6000 cubic inch bags that mount to the frame if you want a bigger pack. You can take the bag off to haul meat. Lots of straps and adjustment to ensure good fit and balance.

Kuiu periodically has sales throughout the year, I got mine on the Father's Day sale.

Look on Cabelas website. They likely have more choices and ideas than anyone. I bought a Camelback there and its well made, sturdy and has a integral water bladder. Lots of good products out there. Field and stream has some that look good with lower price.

I got the alps traverse, liked it on mule deer hunt, plenty of room and the expandable part is nice for packing out meat

I went with this GX speed pack. 9 compartments , a gun sleeve , waist and shoulder harness (great support) and even on waist support compartments.
I plan on using this for trail hunts, as well as horseback, but I am not sure if it could ever carry out meat...
When the time comes I will buy a different pack for that purpose.

I'll post after back from out west hunt, with it.

Thanks all for suggestions.
