What to do when the temp reaches -30??

Postby Deacon » Fri Jan 12, 2018 10:35 am

How about go duck hunting! Record cold these past few weeks inundated our Finger Lakes (several of which do not freeze) with birds. Windchills on Saturday were -30 which was a new cold for me. My PP, Ozzy, handled it just fine. Sunday I was joined by a friend and his two shorthairs. Wind chills were a balmy -15. Believe it or not, those shorthairs did quite well.

That looks crazy. I don't think Otto would get out of the truck. Glad to see youre not letting it get you down. Are those big black and white ducks sawbills?

That looks like a good time. It also looks COLD! A big cold front hit here Thursday. A lot of people are staying inside till it warms back up. The low was 24 degrees. Nicely done!

Yes, they are American / Common Mergansers. We don’t shoot many of them here because they count towards your regular bag limit. These are frozen and used all year long for dog training.

Deacon - What vest is that? Constantly on the search for one that'll fit my deep chested DD. With the cold did the pup sit with y'all the whole time or did you do anything to allow it to warm up? Still trying to learn when is too cold for the dog with water retrieves and cold air temps.

Man I consider myself pretty hardcore when it comes to hunting in inclement weather, but -5 is about the coldest I will waterfowl hunt with Rowdy. Looks like a crazy mixed bag there. Love all the redheads!

It is a Browning vest. You can find them on Amazon. They have Velcro adjustment straps on both shoulders and three Velcro points of attachments across the back. They fit far better than the Avery or the Cabelas vests I own. For the most part the dog just sat next to me all day (all weekend actually). Your dog wil tell you what is too cold. Every dog is different. Last Sunday it was -15 with the windchill and my buddies shorthairs did quite well, making over a dozen retrieves. If the dog isn’t having fun then why bring them?
