Doing my part to save the trout

Postby LongHammer » Sat Jan 06, 2018 6:02 pm

What a difference a week makes. After shooting a limit I went back to visit nice successful spot and nada. So instead of shooting ducks I could eat I decided to save the local trout population by knocking off of couple of sawbills. Looks like the week of almost 80 degree temps push the ducks back north.

And he thought we were done shooting sawbills and Coots

A close up of our prize. Drake sawbills are good looking ducks

Water was down more than a foot in a week. It was almost topping over my waders getting out there earlier this season.

All in all it was well worth taking the day off work for.

Nice looking dog!

I shot a coot last year (could of shot more, but wasn't sure if I would like the taste so I started with one). I wasn't a big fan. I even dry aged it, but it still tasted pretty bad. Maybe I cooked it wrong?

Coots and sawbills get liquid smoke and hit the dehydrator. They are good dog treats I don't eat them. But the sawbills are actually better tasting then the Coots in jerky form believe it or not.

The dog is looking in that picture like... "Yep, this is what my life has become... retrieving sawbills..."
