Spud pointing a Pheasant

30 MPH winds yesterday. Quail get small and gone in a hurry. Spud is doing his Dumbo imitation here.

Spud and I followed a broke up covey into a brush and tree choked draw in the wind yesterday. He went on point in the bottom and I moved ahead to flush. 5 quail flushed using the wind and the brush to full advantage. I struggled to get on a bird and finally shot once, dropping the bird with a broken wing, up and running in the brush. I called Spud to come with me as I moved to the mark. It was so dry and windy that Spud had to put his nose down to the ground to work the track. Several times he stopped and blew dust out of his nose as he worked it 50 yards up the draw then made a 180 degree turn and moved it another 50 yards to this log pile and went on point. The cripple was hiding underneath and a chase ensued all around, over, and under it before Spud brought the bird in to hand still alive.

Spud pointed four full coveys, one partial, numerous singles and two points on pheasants this morning. Things had mostly gone the birds way until our last drop when I was treated to back to back doubles on the Roosters and then Quail over Spuds points. Blessed and know it.
