God's Country Pics from the Devil Bird Opener

Postby RowdyGSP » Sat Oct 07, 2017 12:53 am

Hopefully the pictures show up this time. A buddy and I got out for the chukar opener after chasing grouse for the last few weeks. It was good to get the dogs and boots into the open country. A beer tastes damned good after walking these rugged hills.

Camp we set up in the dark... What a sight to wake up to:

Dogs rearing to go on opening morning, while breakfast cooked:

Hard to beat the view, halfway up the hill:

Picture says it all... love the Inland Northwest:

And ended up with several chukar and quail in the bag:

More beautiful country, dogs and birds. Looks like you earn what you get which is as it should be.

Glad you and the dogs found some birds. Is the hunting as bad as predicted?

Bird numbers are down in terms of covey sizes but we still had 11 pointed coveys of chukar and 5 pointed coveys of quail in 2 days. Definitely some young birds in there too.

Looks like beautiful country. Great photos. I hear it happening occasionally where I hunt but we don't often have over-lapping chukar and quail habitat. We're those birds in pretty close proximity of each other?

That's interesting to hear, because I have always put chukar, hun and valley quail habitat into the same general category. In terms of being able to find all 3 species and maybe an occasional rooster on one walk. So yeah it's pretty common where I hunt to walk up high to hunt chukar and drop down into the bottoms to chase quail. Granted not every bottom has quail, but sometimes you get lucky.

A bag full of chukar has to be the most satisfying game bird. I've got to get out there soon.
