2017 dove opener

Postby Bigearl » Sat Sep 02, 2017 9:41 pm

Well our 40th something opening dove shoot went well. Good food, family and friends, and pretty good bird numbers. 28 guns I think and about 350 birds killed. 12-13 bird to hunter average I think.
How was everyone else opening day?

My Brother and I shot our limits on the opener and I shot another limit yesterday. Expect the action to drop off considerably now. Forecast is for highs in the low 70s and lows in 40s so the local doves will mostly move south. Hopefully the Teal will arrive as the doves leave.

Opener was great, five guns, 128 birds mostly eurasian. Didn't get my limit on morning doves, but still had a great day shooting and my pup got over forty retrieves. Second day was way down in numbers. Will shoot a different area this week. Really a nice start to my season hanging out with friends. Picked up a new Beretta (new for me, but slightly used) O/U 20ga and shot the lights out of it, first time using it in the field and I loved it. Excited for this year's upland and waterfowl season... but then again I'm always excited about an upcoming hunting season. :-)

We had 4 guns in our group and 108 degree heat. I managed 13 birds, 2 short of a limit. My friends managed 1, 6 and 6. I've been shooting in the California Side-by-side society matches so my shooting was better than normal for me. I took my two sons out the next day and we managed 7, 7, 6 birds. Last weekend is was slower with only 8 birds total with 3 guns.

I plucked them and am going to try some of Hank Shaw's recipes.
