1 1/4 12 ga loads

Postby Bigearl » Sun Aug 27, 2017 8:51 pm

Where did they go? That's all we used to shoot was a 3 1/4 dram 1 1/4 loads. Winchester super pigeons, and Remington sureshot. The only 1 1/4 loads you can find now are highbrass.

I'm not sure how these were made years ago, as I paid much less attention to shells. I mostly just shot whatever I could lay my hands on.

"Standard" low brass in 12 GA is now generally 2 3/4 dram. Anything higher than that is going to be high brass I'm pretty sure. 2 3/4 dram with 1 1/8 of shot is going to give you something around 1250 fps, although this varies a slightly by powder type, wad design, etc., etc. You can still get 2 3/4", 3 1/4 dram , 1 1/8 oz of shot loads in various shot sizes at Wal-Mart, but they are high brass and quite expensive.

I shoot Super Sport AA 11/8 oz going 1300 FPS and like em. You can always roll your own.

When I want a lighter load, I shoot what AG shoots. Great shells.

2 3/4 dram shells are under 1200 fps. Heavy trap loads are 3 dram, around 1250 fps, unless times have changed?

I'm really just curious as to why you can't find them in the store anymore. I don't even see them online anywhere. I suppose it wasn't a popular load and was cut from the lineups of manufacturers. I don't shoot upland with a 12 anymore, but my dad does and really misses those heavy loads of old.

You also have to read the boxes carefully. I've noticed that the ShurShot heavy dove loads from Remington vary from gauge to gauge. In the 12 ga load, they have what seems to be a slightly hotter than "standard" powder charge (although they don't list the dram equivalent on the box) with the same payload of shot (1 1/8 oz) to give a bit faster speeds. In the 20 ga load, they bump the shot payload from 7/8 oz to 1 oz, but the speed goes down a bit.

Federal makes a 12 ga. 1 1/4 oz. load at 1,220 fps that would probably be close to what you are looking for. Part # H125. Comes in 4,5,6 & 7.5 shot.

Not really sure what's High Brass anymore, that and Drams are really a throwback to black powder days.

Fiocchi makes a Helice (pigeon) load 1 1/4oz nickel plated 7 1/2 at 1350 fps that would be strong medicine.

YMMV

This is a very valid point. The numbers to look at are shot payload and speed. Obviously you have to match shell length to your gun (2 3/4" vs. 3" etc.), but dram eqiv. and high/low brass are really pointless in this conversation.
