She went quietly into the good night

Postby Steve Anker » Wed Oct 05, 2011 8:06 am

Yesterday, we had to make that tough trip to the Vets. My girl GRITZ suffered from Leukemia after 12 years of great health and stellar performances afield. My Vet gave us some extra life but the affliction took its toll. Her loss to us is monumental. She passed in my arms. The tears are flowing.

Reflecting back helps ease things.

Like her run at the 2007 Pointer National Championship when she had NINE finds. I had to reload my 32 a couple times. She took a hard THIRD.

Like her run of consecutive Wins in 2006-07, I remember some 8 Wins in a row. She was the Top Open Limited Gun Dog, Pointer, both years. Top 10 All Breed too.

Her first All Age Win where she ran a perfect race. Four solid finds, away down range, every time further and deeper on course. Judges withheld second place, despite being in good company, 'cause they felt her performance was too far superior to every other run.

She hunted grouse with us, changing range dramatically when we sported a shotgun afoot.
She retrieved gingerly to hand, with several MH Q's, we ran her just for grins on occassion.

We even used her here on the preserve, guiding in fast forward, always impressing the guests.

Two litters of puppies found their way to great homes and some are still on the big circuit competing.

An absolute pleasure of a dog to have around. Always the gentle ALPHA, assertive but not nasty. She took good care of my brood of GSPs and Pointers.
My heart truly aches.

My Girl in her position of honor...the front seat of my pickup, riding home from a recent FT in New England.

Time is waaay too short, I remember well picking her up at a trial at Assinpink, NJ, from the breeder. Seems like just a few years ago.

So sorry. I remember you telling me about her when we met. Your pride was evident in your eyes as you spoke of her, as evident as it is in your words about her here.

Thanks Sue,

She was sorely missed this weekend as we hunted birds upstate.

It still feels like she is near, around here someplace, I'm sure in spirit she is.
