Another interesting breed

Postby Konza Vadasz » Sun Jul 06, 2008 10:46 pm

A friend who breeds and hunts Wirehaired Vizslas in Germany has added another interesting breed to her kennel, the Griffon Bleu de Gascogne. I'd never seen one or ever even haerd of one. An old breed but almost unknown outside France, the Griffon Bleu is used for boar hunting. http://www.drahthaarvizsla.de/crocodil/frame.htm (click on Griffon Bleu in the sidebar menu and there's another link to more information, but it is in German.)
I believe they are Hounds, and I am a sucker for those wire coats & whiskers.

Griffon Bleu de Gascogne

I dug a little more and found that the Griffon Bleu is a scenthound of very old Pyrenean origin developed through crossing Gascony Bleu with Griffon. It is used for hunting hare with a gun and is also a valuable assistant in tracking wild boar.

Nice looking dog. But in just looking at and not knowing what it was I would have guessed it to be a Hound-Gwp cross.
