Istrian and Balkan hounds

Soem of you will remmeber I was in N.E. Italy last fall and got a chance to go after some wild boar (no luck) and Capriola (luck) with the locals. I fainally got around to uploading some pics.

Here is a Balkan hound, 14 months old.

It was a little confusing getting the breeds sorted due to language barriers. But clearly the white dog with the black head is different, look at the ears. I think it might be what they call a Yugoslavian mountain hound.

The mainly black one tied to the tree looks more like the Balkan hound, but i was told he was not a Balkan hound.

Only the white and orange dogs are the Istrians.

The tri-coloured one (3rd and 4th pic) looks like a Bernese Hound (Berner Laufhund). It's one of the 4 Swiss Hounds:

db7, I have been to Albania a couple of times, once in the 80's and once in the 90's to see family while it was still a communist country. My brother had English setter type bird dogs but his friends had rabbit hounds that looked exactly like the "Balkan hounds" pictured. They seemed a little leggy for rabbits to me, however.

Are they running rabbits or as my guess would be European hares ? Locally refered to in Canada as jacks .

Seadog, I am sure they are hares. All we get around here are cottontails.
