Boyhood and AWS memories

Postby Bruce Schwartz » Sun Apr 08, 2007 6:28 pm

I recently visited my mom (age 94) and took some digital pictures from my childhood scrapbook with our American Water Spaniel, circa 1951 - 1952. The firearm is a Parker 20 ga. (borrowed from my dad) although I hunted mostly with a Lafever 16 ga. double barrel most of my boyhood. The timber shot is at Fountain Grove waterfowl area in N. Missouri and the open river shot is off a sandbar in Missouri River not far from Jefferson City where I grew up. I've hunted ducks every year since. The shot with my dad and sister hunting squirrels is on the Gasconade River in south central Mo., and probably 1949

Superb shots, Bruce, just dynamite. Love that AWS smack in the middle of things. No hunt tests back then, but apropos your question a while back about which breeds can run which tests, seems the AWS from the start was a retriever in the hearts and minds of their owners. Couple of years ago, the AWS parent club grudgingly put in for classification as a spaniel for AKC competition.

Thanks everybody. My dad was a wildlife photographer and artist (one of his works was to illustrate Leopold's "A Sand County Almanac").

Also I brought back a few pictures he'd taken of hunting, dogs, etc. from the 50's that I'll scan them and post in a few days.
