Inheritance of coat color in Labs

Postby blathens » Tue Dec 06, 2005 10:11 pm

Can someone explain how the black, yellow and chocolate lab colors are inherited? I have a friend that has a chocolate lab bitch bred to a yellow stud that had 5 puppies, all BLACK. She had a previous litter bred to a different yellow stud and all the pups were chocolate.
In Pudelpointers and Gwp's you have to breed to a black to get a black. Breeding two brown or brown and white ticked cannot produce a black.

Margaret, thanks for the link. I don't think the explanation on how to use the chart is complete, however. It refers to an "outer ring" showing the visible coat color and a "a small upper right circle" indicating nose color, neither of which seem to be on the chart. Can you help?

dogs coat color

They turned out that way cause there are black gene in the choc and ylw labs. And black gene is usually the dominate gene that gets passed on.

ex choc has a x for choc and b for black
ylw has y ylw and b in its gene pool for colors so when you bree them the bb will most likely come first and will get you more blacks. and if it was cc for the choc and yy for the ylw most likely get some of both colors
choc and ylws
