Slammin' Point Setters

Postby Deuce » Mon Apr 13, 2015 11:37 am

My wife has always loved the looks of setters and I find them an interesting alternative to EPs (No Offense Steve). In my mind I know that we'll always have 2 dogs and at least one will be a wirehair/shorthair to satisfy my duck hunting needs.

With the current issue still up for determination with the VDD and NAVHDA registration I started looking more seriously into setters and those specifically involved in NAVHDA as that's the organization I'm most committed. Google and searches here continually mention Curt Fry and his kennel, Slammin' Point, however it's all 3-4 years old. Is Curt still around, producing setters, and testing in NAVHDA? If so, does anyone have contact, PM would be great.

While primarily a field dog, it will have to swim, and I want a dog that will adjust range close in the woods and range in the prairie.

I'm at least 3 years from a puppy, but I figure it's never to early to start a list of folks to look into.

Yo Deuce.....
Say it ain't so.....

Setters, in my world of Field trialing are a very close second to the venerable POINTER.
Are you looking for an English Setter?
Gordon Setter?
Red and White Setter?
Irish Setter?
Jet Setter?

In my world there are several source for each of the above mentioned.

Just putting the toe in the water, Steve.

English Setter is what I'm looking into. From what I've researched (minimal), I keep seeing Ryman... But I have no idea if I'm on the right trail. Educate me, my friend!

Hey Deuce, Try Frank Speath in northern Minn. Frank has been running setter in NAVHDA for many years. His setters are very nice . I see Frank's hounds several times a week. PM me if you want his phone number. Frank uses kennel name Weatherby. Frank's dogs are weaned on grouse and woodcock

Deuce,

I know Curt and he is/was a member of our chapter.
I have seen several of his dogs. I have been impressed with what I have seen.

Not only is Curt a good guy, breeding very nice dogs, but he is an excellent trainer and good teacher!
I will see if I can dig up some contact info, if so I will send you a PM.

EDIT:
I found some info, check your PM.

If I was gonna buy a Setter, a modified Wooley, I would seek out GROUSE RIDGE Kennels,
the Flanaghans,
in upstate Oxford, NY for a suitable candidate. They raise Setters for the descriminating owners.
tell them what you are looking for and they have it.

I've lost to them on occassion....yep, they beat even ME.
Nice houndzes,
Nice folks, nice dogs
