Anyone hunt over a Wirehair Vizla?

Postby figgel » Sun Aug 17, 2014 2:51 pm

As our Grizzle matures we're beginning the search for dog 2.
We're curious about the WV. Has anyone either owned or hunted over 1? Any insight into biddability?

PP & WPG are still high on the list, but these amber hounds have caught our eye.
We do a lot of late season river waterfowl - strong current. We spend all winter rabbit hunting & we hit upland, when we can. Summer's are spent on pontoons, fishing & swimming! We're active in NAVHDA.

We have kids everywhere -- so a natural nice temperament is non-negotiable...they must have one.

Would love to hear if any fellow V-Doggers have insight to the WV.

thx!!

Never hunted over one, but had one at the clinic the other day. I always thought vislas were flighty and this one was too... Neat looking dog though...

Not enough involved with the breed for a diverse gene pool so pretty tough to give a recommendation. You're way ahead by sticking with larger gene pools in the more popular breeds.

Never seen one... There is a guy who posts here occasionally who I believe has one. Do a search here for the breed and you'll be able to PM him.

To each there own, but I'd get your current pup to where you want him in training/behavior before adding another. I look at pups all the time, but couldn't imagine adding another.

Steve is the guy who I'd get one from if I were to get one. He ships his stock from a kennel overseas that is known to have good dogs. Steve owns Cash, the first WHV to earn a prize at the UT level in NAVHDA. He earned a prize II. What is even more impressive about this is Steve said he never FF'd Cash, nor has Cash ever had an E-collar on. Cash is a pretty large male with a nice tight coat. Steve has a couple of females that seem promising as well. Give Steve a call. His kennel name is County Line Kennel I believe, Out of Oklahoma.

I've hunted over a few. Nice dogs. But like any breed, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. There are good and not-so-good dogs and breeders in every breed. Find a good one.

I saw one at a NA test about 6 years ago. It was a nice dog that was hindered by its owner.

Pretty sure Steve wasnt the first UT qualified dog.
There was at least one dog in Canada that was a UT Prize 1 over 12 years ago.

Your right. I meant to clarify that Steve's dog is the first to earn a UT prize in the USA.

I would strongly recommend staying away from County Line Kennels and Steve Slauson. PM me for more information.

I know of a couple out here. The guy brought them over from europe, cechz I believe. Nice dogs that would probably work well for what you need but they dont run big enough for my liking.

They definatly arent flighty but they are softer like the SHV. People oriented as well, they definatly want to please.

When they bark it sounds like a coon hound.

So, your first post on this forum is one in which you tear down another breeder? That is not good taste if you ask me. You could have simply sent a PM without saying what you did on an open forum. I have hunted with Steve over his dogs and I thought he had good dogs. Also, he has always seemed like a guy who cares about the breed and he has invested a lot into getting the stock he has. Not sure what beef you have with him, and don't care, because I know what I've seen from him and his dogs first hand.
