homemade diet and seizures

Postby huntnvet » Sat Aug 18, 2012 2:29 pm

I'm not interested in starting another debate on the adv/disadv of homemade and raw diets; however, everyone needs to be aware of the harm that an inadequate diet can cause. If you chose this route for your dog's diet, make sure to educate yourself.....and no, research on google doesn't count as education.

The gist of the attached page is: a large breed pup was fed a diet deficient in calcium; thus, the pup began to seizure. Had numerous physiological abnormalities upon further testing.

That's a good reminder.

There is definitely a mountain of differences between "homemade food" and a responsible raw diet.

A common cause of seizures is a diet low in the Omega-3 fatty acid called DHA.

The best source of DHA is from Tuna Oil (not regular fish oil)
