There is no real answer to that question. The maximum age is 16 months. In Alaska we have 1 test a year which pretty much determines the age of the dog when it tests.

So here's my approximately 16 month old dog at the waters edge while I throw a dummy for the 6 month old. The older dog could literally give 2 sh!ts about retrieving a dummy. But she's hell on cripples, and finding game after the shot is where it counts. I have hunting dogs, not mindless retrievers.

I didn't ask her to retrieve. It's only disobedience if I give her a command.

This was a 3 duck blind retrieve set. She had already found the easy two, so feel free to skip the middle 4 minutes.

I don't think obedience to retrieve is a natural ability, and therefore should not result in failure at NA. Failure to retrieve as a test of obedience in tests for older dogs should result in failure.

The dog doesn't have to retrieve. It just needs to swim. Throwing a bumper is just a way to get the dog in the water. If I had an NA dog I was working with I would make it as excited about jumping in after a bumper as I could.
