Introduction to Rosie and Grand Chien Goldens

Grand Chien's Wolf River Rose
Owner: André Fendlason
DOB: 6/21/99
Female Golden
AKC SN652183/03
UKC NA
The purpose of this is to make available to anyone interested a general outline of how this particular pup advances through the different stages of development and how this is pertinent to trainers of hunting retrievers. Especially to those trainers who have never trained a pup from start to finish.

Why? Simply because I can remember when I was attempting my first training more than a few dogs ago. I recall most clearly the lack of anything printed that gave me the feeling that I knew things were flowing smoothly. Yes, there were several good books and more than a few trainers around willing to help but none simply presented a chronological account of the important events for a new pup.

Why Rosie? Because she represents what I consider the ideal Golden pup. I believe her well thought out breeding is a definite step in the right direction for Goldens as a breed. Our goal with this pup will be to take her to the limit of her potential or the limit of her trainers potential. Whichever comes first. Specifically she will be a hunting retriever and a hunt test participant.

I would like to make a couple of points clear about how I train dogs.

  • First and foremost I do not push my dogs.
  • I allow pups to advance as fast as they choose to go.
  • I do not subscribe to heavy handed training.
  • I do use the e-collar when the dogs age & mental development are appropriate.
  • I do not teach with the e-collar, I condition with it.
  • I would also point out that I work with Golden Retrievers and that I think Goldens have a personality that is best taken advantage of rather than suppressed.
My pups are normally what most people would refer to as "early developers." I believe this is true simply due to the environment I train in.

If in looking over Rosie's story you discover that your pup is behind......relax. there is no set time table. If you are ahead with your pup you are either doing something right or---- maybe ----- you need to relax.. ;-)

Hopefully.......... In time this page will grow and this pup will develop into the kind of hunting retriever anyone would be proud to own.

PS: I don't think Andy knew I was going to be doing this with Rosie and I kind of... uh......... sort of.... uh........forgot to mention it. Well at least till I got the pup home anyway.

Thanks for the great pup Andy.

And Now.....................Rosie Week 7.
