Rosie Week 8

8/16/99
(8 Weeks) 11 Lbs.

Rosie's first week home saw some remarkable advances. She has become quite comfortable with her self proclaimed alpha status over the big dogs.

This pup has a passion for water that I have not seen in a pup of her age. So much so that I must keep a very close eye on her anytime she is allowed outside. She is very prone to make a mad dash to our training pond on her own and go for a dip on the sly.

When I actually let her out for the purpose of going to the pond I am instantly in a foot race that I am required to win in order to make sure the big dogs are careful around her when she dives in. Yes, I did say "Dives" and yes the sit command is something I am dreaming about right now.

Rosie has also been on a regular course of live quail and knows exactly where the bird cages are. In fact the bird cages have become a greatly appreciated training partner. They are the only thing interesting enough to slow her down on the way to the pond.

She is already retrieving the live birds and I am looking forward to when she actually understands her name so I can convince myself that she is really delivering the bird for a human. No "ball in the hall" sessions required so far with this pup.

(8 Weeks 2 Days) 11.4 Lbs

Today was another big day. Rosie has learned her name and now responds when called. What is really nice is that she seems to want to show us human beings her bird and is quite happy to bring it along when called.

We have continued with the live quail and have noticed definate development of nose use. Her attention span is not very long but once she smells a planted bird the search does not end until it is found.

This pup continues to enter water like she was born in it and I feel the need to say that this is pretty unusual to have a water loving nut at this age.

(8 Weeks 4 Days) 11.9 Lbs

Today marked the first response to the sit command. Nothing solid yet but the connections are starting to take place. Rosie's water skills continue to amaze me.

8/22/99
(8 Weeks 6 Days) 12 Lbs

Rosie's last two days have been unusual in the extreem. According to our vet both her and Rusty ingested what was likely some sort of an amphetamine. The likely source was contaminated food and how it got there can only be speculated.

Rosie experienced some moderate shakes and was sedated by our vets. The effects are now gone.

Rusty had a rough go of it but is now back to normal. He required a stay at the vet and was treated as a poision case.

The possibility of some truly demented individual is scary. We have been in contact with the police and they have agreed to search our property with some of their drug dogs. I find it unlikely that this sort of a substance was found by our dog on our property but I am a bit worried about letting them have free run of the place until the search is completed.

We were lucky and the only lasting effects of this will be 2 days of lost time. This afternoon saw the first normal activity in the last 2 days.
