(20 Weeks 1 Days) 39.5 Lbs Well this week we took a round about way of avoiding our sit command problems. We switched to back to water work. This allowed us an easy way to continue working and it also encouraged a good sit response while on the bank. This proved to be a very effective but indirect way of fixing the problem. While doing this Rosie did something I like to call "Turned The Corner". In plain English she is now fully willing to do long water work. Distance is no longer a factor and puppy marks are a thing of the past. She also experienced her first water marks thrown into cover. The cover consisted of a large amount of floating leaves. Nothing heavy but it did require her to mark well enough to be within about 15 feet to see the bumper. Our pond is about 60 yards wide and she will completely cross it when required. Last weekend Rosie went to North Louisiana to our hunting camp. She experienced the requirement of good behavior in a new environment. She was pleasant to be around and was not a problem to anyone at the camp. I would like to think this is a good sign of what her personality is going to end up being. Rosie is now 20 weeks old. As hoped we now have a pretty reliable retriever on our hands. She is not handling yet so all birds must be marks. We have experimented with simple doubles and were successful. Rosie knows what a gun is and is beginning to expect birds when she sees the gun. Her marking skill are decent out to about 75 yards. She is for the most part steady. She expects to be heeled into proper position before being released to retrieve. With the above in mind she is fully capable of passing a Junior AKC or Started UKC Hunt Test. Not bad for a young pup! We have decide to go ahead and start some basic handling skills. This is going to happen on the table during the week. The work will be limited for a couple of reasons. First reason is that this work has more stress involved. The biggest reason is that our duck season opens next weekend and we intend to get some of the real thing in with Rusty and Pepper. Rosie's education will continue through duck season but priorities will be shifted a bit. For the next diary entry, please visit Week 21 of Rosie's Journal. |
