Rosie week 18

10/25/99
(18 Weeks 0 Days) 34.0 Lbs

Rosie has now been introduced to big guns in combination with marking drills. Her initiation was done in a very controlled manor in the yard. The results were completely satisfactory and the transition to field work was accomplished in about an hour. This was a special day and it went off without a hitch.

Rosie's biggest improvement this week is in being able to destinguish which dog our commands are intended for. Working Rosie and Rusty at the same time is becoming much easier.

Yes, this is something that I do much differently than most trainers. I like to get pup working with another dog ASAP. It can be confusing for pup during initial duel work but I believe the mental demands placed on pup end up being highly beneficial down the road. I like working with smart dogs and I do what I can to encourage a pup to use it's brain.

Rosie now possesses a fairly wide range of skills and those skills are now advanced and numerous enough that we are going to have to start paying more attention to balancing what we do with her. Her training will start to be much more reactionary on the part of her trainers and the boring repetitive drills of the last two week will start to be fazed out.

In this much more reactionary mode of training we will decide on an area in her training that we believe can be advanced to a higher level and will attempt to move that skill up a notch.

In this case we have decided that big guns and marking skills are ready to move up a notch so that is where we will start. As we progress with this we will be watching for problems that are going to develop in other areas. Not IF but WHEN we see a developing problem we will react by attempting to balance that skill to our current level in all other areas.

To be fair it must be said that this type of training can easily go wrong. We do it this way and are confident in its effectiveness. It may not be good for You.

Our wether has been incredable. Cool nights and mild days have put a fire in our dogs. Rusty will make his first duck hunt of the year on the 13th. and I am convinced he knows the day is close. If we are fortunate Rosie will learn about the real thing sometime towards the end of our waterfowl season.
