Owner input: My wife and I have had three American Water Spaniels. We currently still have two of them. They are smart dogs. They learn very quickly. One of our dogs has both show titles and hunting titles. It is very easy to get a good dog from a number of excellent breeders. But, since there are not that many dogs, you may have to wait. Our dogs are hunting machines. They have hunted everything from quail to geese. We mainly hunt pheasants, grouse and ducks. But we've also used them for rabbits and squirrels to. They tend to bark when on the scent of furred game.
With their dual coats they love the snow and cold. Owners in the South
have told me their dog's coats are a litter thinner, having adapted to
the heat. Our dogs sleep in the bed with us. They are real lap dogs,
only 30-40 lbs. They are very loyal to their owners. Good watch dogs,
but friendly to visitors when introduced. I think they are the most
attractive dogs I've ever seen, especially when the sun shines on their
glistening coats as they return with a bird in their mouth to deliver it
to you. I would recommend the breed to those people looking for an all-around
hunter and companion that won't take up a lot of space or require a lot of
training.
