Trainers,
I have recently purchased an 18 month old yellow lab from a friend who can't take care of him anymore. He has been duck hunting last season and this one but has no formal training. If he sees the bird splashing in the water, no problem, takes off like a shot and brings it right back. If he doesn't see it......it's the old "throw a rock, and make a splash" scenario. Now I have trained two black puppies into very good gun dogs, but I don't claim to be a trainer. I want to work with this dog because he has an awesome personality and completely laid back disposition. If I can turn him into a well trained retriever, look out, he will be the dream duck dog. My question is this...... On water he will retrieve all day, but on land he seems to get bored or distracted after only three or four bumpers. Is this because water is the only retrieving he has done or is there a potentially hidden problem somewhere. I have never seen more potential in a dog than this one and I want to hunt test him. But obviously he has to gain the same desire on land that he has in water. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks Rod It sounds like your dog needs force fetched. Force fetch makes it his duty to retrieve on land and water. I would have a professional trainer force fetch your dog. A pro can do this humanely and alot faster than you could. Find a pro in your area that will let you see the dog often and who can guide you through your dog's hunt test career. thanks
